Investing in original art from Panama: the honest guide
By Pablo Vaca, curator of EL ART DEALER · Updated: Oct 25, 2026
The short answer
- Price depends on the artist, technique, format and provenance: at EL ART DEALER every work is priced on request, with a signed certificate.
- Art guarantees no return: the global market moved ~$57.5 billion in 2024, down 12% from 2023 (Art Basel & UBS, 2025). You buy first for the joy of it.
- What you do control: buying primary at a fair price, demanding certificate + invoice, and conserving the work well.
- Shipping a medium work from Panama to the US costs $150–$400 insured; to Europe, $250–$600.

Is art a good investment in 2026?
Art is first an asset you enjoy and only then a possible store of value: the global art market moved about $57.5 billion in 2024, 12% less than the previous year (Art Basel & UBS Art Market Report 2025). EL ART DEALER's honest rule: invest only money you don't need, in work you want to look at every day.
Unlike an index fund, an artwork pays no dividends and has no ticker price: its "return" combines the daily pleasure of living with it, the cultural weight of a collection built with judgment and — if the artist's career grows — an appreciation that can be significant but is never guaranteed.
The good news if you buy from Panama: the emerging Latin American primary market is one of the few places where the entry ticket is accessible, the work is unique, and the buyer talks directly to the gallery that stands behind the piece. In blue chip you compete with funds; in curated emerging art you compete only with your own eye.
How much money do you need to start collecting?
Less than people tend to think: works on paper and small formats by emerging artists are the most accessible way in, and unique paintings by artists with a track record sit one step above. At EL ART DEALER prices are on request: message us on WhatsApp with your budget and Pablo Vaca will suggest works that fit it.
Price varies with format, technique, and career stage. What matters is the logic: in the emerging primary market you pay today's price for a career that may multiply — and even if it doesn't, you paid a fair price for a unique piece you love.
What determines the price of an artwork?
Five factors, in order of weight: the artist's track record (exhibitions, sales, collections), format (square centimeters matter), technique (oil usually prices above acrylic; textile, by hours of labor), uniqueness (unique piece > edition), and documented provenance. Two same-size works can differ 10× on these factors.
An example in round numbers: a 100 × 80 cm painting by an emerging Panamanian artist with two group shows might cost $1,800; the same size by an artist with ten gallery years, a regional museum, and auction records, $12,000. The canvas costs the same — what you buy is the career, verified.
That is why the curator's role matters: their job is to tell you where each work sits on that curve and why its price is fair — or not.
How do you legally protect an art purchase?
With three papers and one habit: the signed certificate of authenticity (identifies the work), the purchase invoice (date, price, seller — your proof of provenance), and, for future resale, the exhibition history if it exists. The habit: proper conservation — in the tropics, that means away from direct sun and extreme humidity.
At EL ART DEALER the certificate is included in every sale and the invoice is standard. For works on paper in tropical climate, museum framing with UV glass is not a luxury: it is the difference between a living work and a yellowed one ten years in.
How does buying Panamanian art from abroad work?
Just like buying locally, plus professional shipping: art packing (corner protectors, acid-free paper, rigid box or wooden crate), door-to-door insurance at 1–2% of value, and tracked courier. Panama to the US: 3–7 business days and $150–$400 for a medium format; to Europe, 5–10 days and $250–$600 (Jul 2026).
| Destination | Small (≤ 60 cm) | Medium (≤ 100 × 80 cm) | Large (crate) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Panama (domestic) | $20 – $60 | $40 – $120 | $150 – $300 |
| US / Canada | $80 – $200 | $150 – $400 | $500 – $900 |
| Europe | $120 – $300 | $250 – $600 | $700 – $1,200 |
| Rest of the world | On quote | On quote | On quote |
On taxes: original artworks generally enter the US duty-free (HS heading 9701); in the European Union they pay reduced import VAT in most countries. Buyers are responsible for destination taxes — at EL ART DEALER we verify this with you before closing, so the total cost holds no surprises.
What are the most common first-buyer mistakes?
Five mistakes account for nearly every bad purchase: paying without certificate or invoice, not comparing the artist's prices before paying, ignoring tropical conservation, buying decorative reproduction at original-art prices, and expecting appreciation in 2 years — art is measured in decades.
- 01Buying without certificate or invoice. No papers, no provenance; no provenance, and resale is worth less and costs more.
- 02Not comparing. Before paying, ask what that artist has sold and for how much. A serious gallery answers with data, not adjectives.
- 03Ignoring the climate. Direct sun and humidity ruin work within years. Proper framing costs less than restoration.
- 04Confusing décor with art. An unsigned giclée or a department-store canvas is not an investment — it is furniture. Lovely, perhaps, but furniture.
- 05Expecting express returns. If you need liquidity in 24 months, art is not your asset. If you can wait a decade in the company of a work you love, it is.
How do you start today, in practice?
Three steps: set a budget that doesn't hurt, browse a curated catalog — not infinite marketplaces — and talk before paying: a serious curator explains the price, provides a certificate, and lets you hold the work free of charge. At EL ART DEALER that process starts with a WhatsApp message.
