The story

An oval bathtub seen from above fills almost the whole canvas. Its rim is thick and pale grey, worked with body; from the upper edge rise two black taps with curving profiles, and from one of them a white vertical line falls, breaking off inside the tub, past the halfway point and without reaching the bottom.

Inside there is no water but objects: a spinning top with a pale body, a blue band and, beneath it, an orange one, from which a cord loops at its foot, running out to the left rim of the tub and, to the right, fading away past the halfway point; a ball striped in orange and blue; and, at the right, a second top hanging from a thread. In the upper rim a dark rectangular recess opens with a pale element inside, and at the lower right a pale block interrupts the oval.

Almost everything is painted in greys: the ground is a scratched, mottled surface, darker at the corners, which leaves the tub floating with no floor or wall to place it.

Why this work?

This untitled work (2016) by José Córdova is an acrylic on canvas measuring 123 × 173 cm: an oval bathtub seen in plan, with two black taps, a spinning top with its cord and a striped ball inside, painted throughout in mottled greys. A unique, signed work. It was selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for its large-wall scale and for what it achieves with a single object.

In your space

A large-format piece with restrained color: it works alone on a broad living or dining room wall, with nothing competing beside it.
