The story

A ship occupies the centre of the canvas, and it is made of cardboard. The hull is a pale grey plane covered in technical-drawing lines that trace an aeroplane — the fuselage punctuated by a row of small circles, the triangular tail fin and, below, spoked wheels — and above it runs a band of brown cardboard with its flaps open, like an unfolded box. On the deck stand a white tower with square windows topped by a red box, three green cylinders — one to the left of the tower and two to its right — and a dark horse at a gallop.

Around it more boxes are stacked, flaps raised and windows cut out: two brown ones at the left, a violet-blue and a red one in the centre, a white one behind the prow, a pale blue one between the red and the orange, and an orange one at the right. Scattered through the air and across the ground are spinning tops — pale cones with their point and a ring of beads —, two striped balls and, very small, some wheeled carts with canopies lined up at the lower centre. Very fine vertical threads hang down: some start almost at the top edge and others begin already in mid-air. Some carry a red tip; one of them a green one.

A dark band crosses the canvas from side to side and serves as a horizon: below it, the ochre field gives back the boxes and the objects resting on the ground in a blurred reflection. The work is signed at the lower right.

Why this work?

This untitled work (2018) by José Córdova is an acrylic on canvas measuring 61 × 123 cm: a cardboard ship with a white tower, a red box and a horse on deck, surrounded by open boxes, spinning tops and striped balls, all reflected on an ochre field. A unique, signed work. It was selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for its panoramic format and the quiet of its palette.

In your space

The landscape format calls for a long stretch of wall: above a sideboard, a low sofa or along a wide corridor, with indirect light.
