The story

A biplane occupies the centre of the canvas: fuselage and engine in terracotta tones, wings and upper surfaces in blue-grey, a wooden propeller and a white nose with a painted legend reading «EL POSTA». The machine rests on a group of cubic volumes — two earth-colored blocks and a blue house with windows — like a toy aeroplane set down on a toy village.

Around it, scattered across the whole surface and through the sky too, small objects repeat: spinning tops, each with its colored cone and a ring of white beads turning around it — the collection's inventory records another work by Córdova titled «Serie Trompos» —; balls striped in red, blue and white; and, at the lower centre, a little train of three red wagons on spoked wheels. From the top edge two very fine vertical threads, tipped in red, drop down and stop at the horizon line.

The field is a lavender grey that serves at once as sky, ground and water: below the horizon line, everything repeats in a blurred reflection. The work is signed at the lower right and comes on unstretched canvas.

Why this work?

«Esperando aquel día» (2018), by José Córdova, is an acrylic on canvas measuring 100 × 100 cm: a biplane with a terracotta fuselage and blue-grey wings, its white nose lettered «EL POSTA», set down on earth-colored blocks and a blue house, in a lavender field populated by spinning tops, striped balls and a little train of red wagons. A unique, signed work on unstretched canvas, selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for its suspended atmosphere and square format.

In your space

The square format and muted palette work in restful spaces: a bedroom, a study or a neutral-toned living room with indirect natural light.
