"Untitled" in a room
Room view — approximate scale on a 3.2 m wall

The story

The print occupies a square image in the upper half of a sheet with wide margins: little paper is left above it and more than twice as much below. That imbalance is deliberate and it is the first thing you see.

Inside, over a green field whose upper part turns dark brown, there is a large animal in profile — a heavy body and one raised horn — covered entirely by a web of dark line that runs over it like a tattoo. In front, smaller and reserved in white, a standing human figure rises, filled with the same tangle of lines. At the lower left, a series of parallel horizontal rules closes the composition.

The collection's inventory records the authorship only as «Ismael». Below the image, in pencil, run the edition number on the left and the date and signature on the right.

Why this work?

This untitled work (1977), attributed in the inventory to «Ismael», is a screenprint on a 76 × 60.6 cm sheet: a large animal in profile, with one raised horn and its body covered by a web of dark line, over a green field; in front, a standing human figure reserved in white. The image is printed in the upper half of the sheet, with a very wide lower margin. Edition XII/C, signed in pencil. It was selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for the weight the paper margin carries in the composition.

In your space

The wide margin calls for a sober frame and free space around it: it shines on a white study or bedroom wall, where the white of the paper continues into the wall.

About the artist

Ismael

Biographical details to be confirmed · Printmaking

The collection's inventory records the authorship as «Ismael»; on the print itself the pencil signature is cursive and does not allow confirmation. We have not been able to identify him through any public source, so the only thing that can be stated is what the work shows: a color screenprint from 1977, edition XII/C, with an animal in profile covered by a web of dark line and a human figure reserved in white.
