The story
Two interlocking lozenges dominate the sheet. Each is formed by a wide white band that folds back on itself at right angles, like a ribbon of folded paper, and the two link at the centre. Around and beneath them runs a weave of diagonal black-and-white stripes that runs off all four edges of the sheet, with no margin and no rest.
In the middle of that black-and-white geometry there are only two accents of color, and they are the same size: a yellow square set on point inside the upper lozenge and a blue one inside the lower. They are small and symmetrical, and they are what stops the eye in a composition that would otherwise spin without end.
The relief is feigned: the bands seem to lift off the sheet thanks to the stippled gradients that fall to one side of each fold, but the whole surface is flat. This is the vocabulary by which Omar Rayo (1928–2010) is recognised: knots, ribbons and labyrinths on the border between geometric abstraction and Op art. There are two pencil inscriptions along the lower margin.
Why this work?
This untitled screenprint by Omar Rayo measures 73 × 54 cm: two interlocking lozenges formed by folded white bands, over a weave of diagonal black-and-white stripes that runs off all four edges, with one yellow and one blue square of the same size as the only accents of color. Edition 50/150. It was selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER as a direct example of Rayo's language of ribbons and labyrinths; in 1981 he founded the Museo Rayo de Dibujo y Grabado Latinoamericano.
In your space
Black and white fits almost any interior and does not compete with the color of the room: it shines on a light wall in a living room, study or corridor, and takes very well to a box frame like the one it already has.
