The story

A red apple hangs in the air, a little more than halfway down, from a braided cord that drops straight from the top edge and is tied to the stalk with a bow. The fruit is painted in almost photographic detail: the white highlight on top, the red darkening toward the sides and the small lobes at the base.

The background is black from top to bottom, with no other reference, so that the cord and the fruit are the only light in a very tall canvas. The signature, very faint, is at the lower right.
