The story

The surface is occupied edge to edge. At the centre, over a navy-blue ground, green foliage of small leaves piles up; below, to left and right, large fern fronds open in a bluish white. The whole perimeter burns in red and black, and long canes and strokes in white and yellow cross the composition diagonally.

Among the vegetation in the upper area a pale face emerges, its eyes barely marked, half-covered by leaves and ringed by a halo drawn in yellow. It is hard to see at first and, once seen, impossible to unsee.

Along the lower edge, in yellow letters on red, three words can be read: MENE on the left, TEKEL at the centre and PERES on the right; beside them, without quite enclosing them, are hand-drawn loops and circles in yellow. They are the words that, in the Book of Daniel, a hand writes on the wall during Belshazzar's feast. Below the image, in pencil, run the artist's proof annotation, the artist's signature and the date; the signature is cursive and cannot be read clearly in the photograph.

Why this work?

This untitled work (1993), by Arnaldo Roche Rabell, is a screenprint on paper measuring 95 × 75 cm: green foliage over a navy-blue ground, large fern fronds in bluish white and a perimeter of red and black, with a pale face emerging among the leaves and the words MENE, TEKEL and PERES along the lower edge. An artist's proof (A/P), signed and dated in pencil. It was selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for the density of its surface and for the hidden face that organises it.

In your space

It asks for distance and a wall of its own: in a living room or a study with a neutral backdrop, its red commands the whole room from several metres away.

About the artist

Arnaldo Roche Rabell

Puerto Rico, 1955–2018 · Neo-expressionist painting

Arnaldo Roche Rabell (San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1955–2018) studied architecture at the University of Puerto Rico and earned his MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1984. He is associated with neo-expressionism: he worked in portrait, self-portrait and landscape at heroic scale, with a technique of his own — layers of vivid color covered in black and rubbed back with a spatula, a form of frottage, until the image emerges.
