"Serie Trompos" in a room
Room view — approximate scale on a 3.2 m wall

The story

Against a brown, textured field a lighter grey panel is set, bordered by a line of dots running its whole perimeter and with a shadow that separates it from the ground. Inside the panel, an almost white horizontal band carries the scene.

At the left there is a spinning top: the body of a peg-top, a metal point, barely tilted. From it a long, low trail runs to the right in earth tones and greys, breaking up as it goes and filling the rest of the band. It is the only figure in the work.

Beneath the trail, written by hand in capitals, in a fine dark stroke, is the inscription «TROYA Y EL GUARAL». In the Venezuelan spinning-top game, the troya is the circle traced on the ground where the top is set spinning, and the guaral is the cord used to launch it: the game's two names, placed at the foot of the image. The work is signed at the lower right, on the brown field.

Why this work?

«Serie Trompos» (2013), by José Córdova, is an acrylic on canvas measuring 87 × 153 cm: a spinning top and its trail on a pale band, within a grey panel set against a brown field, with the inscription «TROYA Y EL GUARAL» — the game's circle and its cord — beneath the image. A unique, signed work, selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for its economy and the childhood memory it names.

In your space

The earth palette and horizontal format suit a study or a library, where the handwritten inscription can be read close up.
