The story

In «Signum», Gerd Leufert pares the image down to its essence: a bold navy-blue sign, crisply cut against a fine grid. The silkscreen fixes the contrast between the solid form and the lattice that holds it, while the horizontal format lets the sign breathe like a character from an alphabet of its own. There is no anecdote and no recognizable figure—only the graphic gesture taken to its cleanest point.

That economy is no accident. Leufert (Lithuania/Venezuela, 1914–1998) was a pioneer of modern graphic design in Venezuela, and his artwork extends the same discipline: the 'sign' and pure graphism as subject matter. This piece carries his vocabulary—synthesis, compositional rigor—that made him a a pioneer of modern graphic design in Venezuela, at the crossing of design and art.

Why this work?

«Signum» (1987), by Gerd Leufert, is a silkscreen on paper measuring 51 × 62 cm: a commanding navy-blue sign cut against a fine grid, pure graphism in a horizontal format. A work on paper from the edition 18/120, signed. It was selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for the synthesis and rigor of a pioneer of modern Venezuelan graphic design.

In your space

Its horizontal format and calm blue make it ideal for a wide wall above a desk, a sideboard or a bed's headboard, where the sign orders the space without crowding it.
