The story

Two standing figures, very close together, occupy the centre of the sheet. A bald man in a finely striped suit has his eyes closed; beside him, a nude female figure rests one arm on his shoulder and passes the other across his chest. Her face is resolved in a flat orange-red, and a black mass of tight strokes falls down her back as hair.

The rest is economy: a continuous black contour, a grey-green wash over the man's head and suit, pinks for her skin, and a large terracotta stain spread behind both figures. The background is left blank, with no scene and no place.

Pedro León Zapata (1929–2015) was a painter and a press draughtsman, and that double practice shows in this print: the line goes straight in and does not correct itself. The artist's proof carries «P/A» in pencil on the left and the signature «ZAPATA 75» on the right.

Why this work?

This untitled work (1975), by Pedro León Zapata, is a screenprint on paper measuring 73 × 66 cm: a bald man in a striped suit with his eyes closed and, beside him, a nude female figure passing an arm across his chest, her face in orange-red and her hair resolved as a black mass of strokes, on a white ground with a large terracotta stain. An artist's proof (A/P) signed «ZAPATA 75». It was selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for the economy of its drawing.

In your space

Its white ground and mid-size make it work on a light wall at eye level: a bedroom, an entryway, or paired with another print of the same format.
