The story

This untitled piece presents a standing female figure, drawn in India ink with a faint, economical line. The drawing —signed and dated— barely suggests the body with a few precise gestures, letting the paper breathe around the figure and sustain its serene presence.

Cornelis Zitman (1926–2016), a Dutch artist based in Venezuela, was a sculptor and draughtsman known above all for his female figures in bronze. This work on paper shows his side as a draughtsman around that same theme: the study of the female figure, where line seeks the volume and character that also define his sculpture.

Why this work?

This untitled work (1974) by Cornelis Zitman is an India ink drawing on paper measuring 19 × 12 cm, in a signed edition numbered 2/3. A standing female figure, drawn with a faint, economical line, connects with the great theme of the Dutch sculptor and draughtsman based in Venezuela. It was selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for the delicacy of its line and its very small edition.

In your space

Its very small, vertical format calls for a short viewing distance: a reading wall, an intimate corner, or a group of drawings where its subtle line can be appreciated up close.
