The story

A woman sits on the edge of a pale sofa, in three-quarter profile, legs crossed and wearing heels. The body is resolved in reds, oranges and ochres that spill beyond the contour; the head is covered by a cloth falling at both sides and hiding half the face.

The background is a flat turquoise standing in for a wall, the sofa is drawn with a continuous white line, and the floor is a chequerboard of reds and greys in perspective. The glass paint leaves the colors translucent and highly saturated, and in places it can be seen dripping.

At the lower right, over the chequerboard, is the signature: «DAVID ACOSTA / COPENHAGUE 80». It is one of four works by Acosta in the collection inscribed «COPENHAGUE».

Why this work?

This untitled work (1980), by David Acosta, is glass paint on card measuring 50 × 34 cm: a woman seated on a pale sofa, resolved in translucent reds and ochres, her head covered by a cloth, against a turquoise ground and a chequerboard floor. A unique piece signed «DAVID ACOSTA / COPENHAGUE 80». It was selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for the saturation of its color and because it is signed in Copenhagen in 1980.

In your space

Small in format and intense in color, it works at eye level and up close: a bedroom, a corridor or a stairwell wall.

About the artist

David Acosta

Venezuela · Figurative painting

David Acosta is a painter with a figurative, narrative streak: scenes of crowds and urban characters, resolved with firm drawing and saturated color, often in glass paint, which leaves the color translucent. He lived in Copenhagen in the early 1980s, according to Pablo Vaca, and four of his works in this collection are signed there: two in 1980, one in 1983 and one in 1985.
