The story

A face fills the sheet, and almost all of it is blank paper. Acosta has painted only around it — the hair, the shadow of the neck, the sides of the face — with patches of a very diluted salmon ochre, so that the face exists by virtue of what has not been painted.

The features are minimal: two pale hollows for the eyes, a patch for the mouth, and little else. The paint has run and dripped in several places, and those traces are left in view as part of the drawing.

It is the opposite of Acosta's saturated-color works in the collection: here the color has almost disappeared. At the lower right, in yellow, the signature: «DAVID ACOSTA / COPENHAGUE 85».

Why this work?

This untitled work (1985), by David Acosta, is glass paint on paper measuring 29 × 22 cm: a face that fills the sheet and exists by reserve, the white of the paper standing in for skin, with patches of very diluted salmon ochre around it. A unique piece signed «DAVID ACOSTA / COPENHAGUE 85». It was selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for how little it needs to hold an image.

In your space

Very pale and very quiet: it fits a bedroom or a restful space, with a white frame and a light wall, and at close range.

About the artist

David Acosta

Venezuela · Figurative painting

David Acosta is a painter with a figurative, narrative streak: scenes of crowds and urban characters, resolved with firm drawing and saturated color, often in glass paint, which leaves the color translucent. He lived in Copenhagen in the early 1980s, according to Pablo Vaca, and four of his works in this collection are signed there: two in 1980, one in 1983 and one in 1985.
