"Copenhague" in a room
Room view — approximate scale on a 3.2 m wall

The story

Everything is resolved in a single color: a brown ochre applied in washes of varying load over the white of the paper. Where the paint runs thick the stroke is almost black; where it runs thin, the whole sheet shows through beneath.

The scene is a wing chair with two figures: one seated, legs crossed, and another behind, leaning on the back. The chair is drawn with a quick, sure stroke, the line running around arms and cushions.

Across the upper part of the sheet, a hand-drawn rectangle runs almost its full width behind the chair, like a picture hung on the wall. At the lower right, in yellow, the signature: «DAVID ACOSTA 83 / COPENHAGUE».

Why this work?

«Copenhague» (1983), by David Acosta, is glass paint on paper measuring 29 × 22 cm: a wing chair with two figures, resolved in washes of a single brown ochre over the white of the sheet, with a hand-drawn rectangle crossing the upper part. A unique piece signed «DAVID ACOSTA 83 / COPENHAGUE». It was selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for the confidence of its line and its economy of means.

In your space

A small, monochrome work: it calls for a sober frame, a light wall and close viewing. It pairs very well with the untitled 1985 sheet, also inscribed «COPENHAGUE» and of the same dimensions (29 × 22 cm).

About the artist

David Acosta

Venezuela · Figurative painting

David Acosta is a painter with a figurative, narrative streak: scenes of crowds and urban characters, resolved with firm drawing and saturated color, often in glass paint, which leaves the color translucent. He lived in Copenhagen in the early 1980s, according to Pablo Vaca, and four of his works in this collection are signed there: two in 1980, one in 1983 and one in 1985.
