The story

A frieze almost two metres long and sixty centimetres high. The upper band is an orange sky; below it, a blue band of water; and the rest, a ground covered in circles of mauve, pink and blue that acts as a public square.

Across that stage, Acosta distributes scenes with no single centre: acrobats on bicycles with large spoked wheels, leaping figures, a group seated on a bench at the left, a huddle of standing figures at the right and, below, two musicians with stringed instruments. At the centre, far larger than the rest, a woman's face with closed eyes rises out of the ground and organises the whole composition.

The colors are translucent and overlap without mixing, as glass paint does. The work is signed at the lower right and dated 2009.

Why this work?

This untitled work (2009), by David Acosta, is glass paint on card measuring 60 × 190 cm: a frieze with an orange sky, a blue band of water and a ground of mauve and pink circles, populated by acrobats on large-wheeled bicycles, musicians and groups of figures, with a large woman's face, eyes closed, rising at the centre. A unique, signed work, selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for its frieze format and its left-to-right reading.

In your space

Almost two metres wide by sixty high: this is a work for a long stretch of wall. It goes above a sideboard, a headboard or along a corridor, where it can be walked past.

About the artist

David Acosta

Venezuela · Figurative painting

David Acosta is a painter with a figurative, narrative streak: scenes of crowds and urban characters, resolved with firm drawing and saturated color, often in glass paint, which leaves the color translucent. He lived in Copenhagen in the early 1980s, according to Pablo Vaca, and four of his works in this collection are signed there: two in 1980, one in 1983 and one in 1985.
