The story

A white horse crosses the canvas from right to left with a rider on its back, a figure with a thick striped band at the waist, raising one arm. Everything around it is crowded together: blue spheres on the ground and in the air, cubes and flat-sided boxes, triangular mesh shapes, a fishbowl with red fish and, at the right, a table with a basket of fruit in which a slice of watermelon shows.

Across the top, over a red band, runs the outline of a city with domes, and at the right, in a blue band, a cyclist rides past. The painting is made in loose strokes, with outlines picked out in white. The signature, in two lines, is at the lower right.

Why this work?

This untitled work (2016) by David Acosta is an acrylic on canvas measuring 105 × 159 cm (recorded as the frame size; the canvas is still to be measured): a rider on a white horse among blue spheres, a fishbowl, a basket of fruit, a cyclist and a domed city. A unique, signed work, selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for its scale and crowded narrative.

In your space

A large, story-filled format: it calls for a broad living or dining room wall, seen from some distance.

About the artist

David Acosta

Venezuela · Figurative painting

David Acosta is a painter with a figurative, narrative streak: scenes of crowds and urban characters, resolved with firm drawing and saturated color, often in glass paint, which leaves the color translucent. He lived in Copenhagen in the early 1980s, according to Pablo Vaca, and four of his works in this collection are signed there: two in 1980, one in 1983 and one in 1985.
