The story

A horse with very long legs and a short body stands on a cast base with an irregular outline, like a piece of ground. The neck stretches up and forward and the head lengthens until it becomes almost a bar; the haunch, by contrast, gathers and drops.

The surface is unpolished: the casting has preserved the marks of modelling from the original, with its pinches and cuts. The patina is very dark, almost black, with highlights where the piece has been rubbed.

Enrico Armas is both a painter and a sculptor, and this piece belongs to the sculptural part of his work. The work carries no date and no recorded edition number.

Why this work?

This untitled sculpture by Enrico Armas is a bronze measuring 41 × 31 × 13 cm: a horse with very long legs and a stretched neck, on a cast base with an irregular outline, its surface unpolished and its patina almost black. It was selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER because it shows the sculptural side of an artist who appears in the catalog mainly as a painter.

In your space

It is a tabletop sculpture: it shines on a console, a sideboard or a shelf, with a light wall behind so the drawing of the legs reads clearly.

About the artist

Enrico Armas

Venezuela, 1957 · Painting and sculpture

Enrico Armas Ponce (Caracas, Venezuela, 23 November 1957) is a painter and sculptor, son of the writer Alfredo Armas Alfonzo and of Aída Ponce. He began exhibiting in Caracas as a teenager and in 1977 won the Pepino Acquavella Prize at the V Salón Nacional de Jóvenes. The following year, on a French government scholarship, he trained in France — among other places at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His work moves from abstraction to figuration and back, almost always with color leading.
