"Cascada y caballo" in a room
Room view — approximate scale on a 3.2 m wall

The story

The canvas is built with palette knife and wide brush, in a range of greys, whites and muted greens. There is no drawing: the picture is organised by blocks of matter, with an almost black mass to the left of centre and an intense green band dropping vertically beside it.

Two-thirds of the way down, a thin horizontal red line crosses from the centre to the right. It is the only saturated accent on the whole surface and works as the axis dividing the more agitated upper part from the lower one, where the pigment gathers in ochres and earths.

Armas's title names two things — a waterfall and a horse — that are not depicted: the painting stays on the side of abstraction and leaves the subject in the name. It is signed in red, lower right.

Why this work?

«Cascada y caballo» (1998), by Enrico Armas, is an acrylic on canvas measuring 60 × 80 cm: an abstraction in palette knife and wide brush, in greys, whites and muted greens, with an almost black mass on the left, a vertical green band and a thin horizontal red line as its only saturated accent. A unique, signed work, selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for the restraint of its range and the force of its matter.

In your space

Its grey range and horizontal format suit sober interiors: a study, a neutral-toned living room or a wide corridor, where the red line reveals itself as you approach.

Enrico Armas Ponce (Caracas, Venezuela, 23 November 1957) is a painter and sculptor, son of the writer Alfredo Armas Alfonzo and of Aída Ponce. He began exhibiting in Caracas as a teenager and in 1977 won the Pepino Acquavella Prize at the V Salón Nacional de Jóvenes. The following year, on a French government scholarship, he trained in France — among other places at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
