The story

Blue and cream, and little else. Over a ground worked in vertical brushstrokes, a large four-legged structure occupies the centre of the canvas: it can be read as an animal, a table or an easel, and the painting does not settle the question.

The upper half is populated with loose signs — circles, arcs, an oval —, some drawn in blue and others in cream, with no apparent relation to one another. On the left, smaller, a standing human figure can be made out.

The signature «ARMAS» is painted large, in dark blue, across the light band at the lower right: not a discreet mark in the margin but one more element of the composition. The work carries no date.

Why this work?

This untitled work by Enrico Armas is an acrylic on canvas measuring 80 × 60 cm: in blue and cream, a large four-legged structure — animal, table or easel — occupies the centre, surrounded by loose signs in the upper half, with a small standing figure on the left. A unique, signed work, its signature painted large as one more element. Selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for its economy of color and its ambiguity.

In your space

Its short palette — blue on cream — makes it easy to place: a white wall, natural light and free space around it, in a study or a bedroom.

Enrico Armas Ponce (Caracas, Venezuela, 23 November 1957) is a painter and sculptor, son of the writer Alfredo Armas Alfonzo and of Aída Ponce. He began exhibiting in Caracas as a teenager and in 1977 won the Pepino Acquavella Prize at the V Salón Nacional de Jóvenes. The following year, on a French government scholarship, he trained in France — among other places at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His work moves from abstraction to figuration and back, almost always with color leading.
