The story

This is the palest of the Armas works in the collection: creams, beiges and pearl greys, with a little pale yellow and a muted mauve in the upper left corner. The paint is applied almost dry and lets the weave of the canvas show through in several areas.

On the left, mounted on a post, a white horse can be made out: head, neck and haunch drawn in the same material as the ground, barely a tone above it. Not a horse in a field but a carousel or toy horse, held up by a bar.

The rest of the surface resolves into blocks of brushwork that never quite become objects. The signature «ENRICO ARMAS» appears at the lower right. The work carries no date.

Why this work?

«Caballo blanco», by Enrico Armas, is an acrylic on canvas measuring 60 × 80 cm: a surface of creams, beiges and pearl greys, painted almost dry, from which a white horse emerges on the left, mounted on a post like a carousel figure. A unique, signed work, selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER because the figure appears and disappears with the light falling on the canvas.

In your space

Its lightness makes it the easiest of the Armas works to live with: it fits a bedroom, a corridor or a bright living room, on a light wall with natural light.

Enrico Armas Ponce (Caracas, Venezuela, 23 November 1957) is a painter and sculptor, son of the writer Alfredo Armas Alfonzo and of Aída Ponce. He began exhibiting in Caracas as a teenager and in 1977 won the Pepino Acquavella Prize at the V Salón Nacional de Jóvenes. The following year, on a French government scholarship, he trained in France — among other places at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His work moves from abstraction to figuration and back, almost always with color leading.
