The story

A large woman's head fills almost the whole sheet: a pale face with brown eyes and red lips, hair in pinks and oranges falling to the left, all drawn in lines of color over a white ground. On top of the head, as if on a pedestal, a small golden figure sits on a chair, one arm raised holding something like a sheet of paper; one of its legs hangs down the side of the hair.

The background is a flat sky blue. At the lower right, the signature «DAVID ACOSTA» and, beneath it, «COPENHAGUE 80». It is the fourth work by Acosta in the catalogue with the name Copenhagen written beside the signature, alongside those from 1980, 1983 and 1985.

Why this work?

«Copenhague» (1980), by David Acosta, is a glass paint on card measuring 70 × 50 cm (recorded as the frame size; the sheet is still to be measured): a large woman's head in pinks and oranges on a sky-blue ground, with a small golden figure seated on top. A unique work, signed and inscribed «COPENHAGUE 80», selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for its graphic force and its inscription.

About the artist

David Acosta

Venezuela · Figurative painting

David Acosta is a painter with a figurative, narrative streak: scenes of crowds and urban characters, resolved with firm drawing and saturated color, often in glass paint, which leaves the color translucent. He lived in Copenhagen in the early 1980s, according to Pablo Vaca, and four of his works in this collection are signed there: two in 1980, one in 1983 and one in 1985.
