The story

A child rides a white horse whose body is in the water up to its belly. He wears a tall white lace headdress and a smooth white ruff at the neck, an orange tunic sown with dots that have blue and green centres, and stockings striped in pink and blue; in one hand he holds the bridle, and to his right, among the trunks and level with his head, a pale elongated form stands out, like a plume. He looks to one side, out of the picture.

The horse's bridle is a row of black beads running along its crest, and the ears and muzzle stand out in dark grey against the white of the coat. Behind rises a wood of bare, bluish, leafless trees, with a band of green moss halfway up both banks.

In the water, dark and still, the reflection gives back the orange tunic with its dots and the striped stocking, broken into ripples. Floating around are little folded paper boats, white, one at the left and several at the right. The work is signed and dated at the lower right.
