The story

A horse comes head-on, its head lowered, one foreleg extended down to the dark patch that serves as ground and the other flexed, its black hoof raised. It is painted in broad, loose strokes: ochres and creams in the face and chest, greyish greens along the neck and flank, blacks in the hooves and in the mane, which falls untidily over its eyes.

The tail, long and pale, sweeps open to the right in a gesture that takes up almost that whole side of the board. The ground describes no place: it is a field of pale greens, greys and touches of turquoise, laid in with the same loose stroke as the animal, so that figure and air are made of one substance.

Below, the hooves resolve into dark patches and a trail of paint that serves as ground. The signature, long and calligraphic, crosses the lower right corner, with a second, smaller written line beneath it and a circular spiral motif that the line of the signature itself crosses.

Why this work?

This untitled work by Alexis Fernández Salazar is an oil on cardboard measuring 100 × 70 cm: a horse seen head-on, head lowered and tail sweeping to the right, resolved in broad strokes of ochre, greyish green and black against a ground of the same air. A unique, signed work, box-framed, selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for the freedom of its handling and the frontal presence of the animal.

In your space

The vertical format and pale ground call for a sober wall: an entryway, the gap between two windows, or a stairwell wall.
