The story

A horse's head in profile, facing left, fills almost the whole panel. It is resolved in an intense orange ochre, with the jaw and muzzle modelled in darker strokes and the eye reduced to a black mark with a pale highlight.

The mane is cropped short and stands up along the neck like a crest: a row of black tufts alternating with white and grey ones, finished in points. Over the muzzle and jaw the black closes into solid patches and bands; the bridge of the nose stays in continuous ochre, with nothing on it but the vertical runs.

Over the whole surface fall vertical black runs that start at the mane and descend to the lower edge, crossing animal and bluish-white ground alike. The calligraphic signature crosses the lower right corner. In the upper right margin there is also a handwritten inscription, written vertically, which is not legible in the photograph.

Why this work?

This untitled work by Alexis Fernández Salazar is an acrylic on MDF measuring 100 × 70 cm: a horse's head in profile in orange ochre, its mane in black and white tufts and a rain of vertical black runs crossing figure and ground alike. A unique, signed work, framed in a white box, selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for the strength of the ochre and the contrast between portrait and drip.

In your space

The ochre calls for a white wall and frontal light; it works well in a dining room or a study, and pairs naturally with the same artist's blue head.
