"Figura y ciudad" in a room
Room view — approximate scale on a 3.2 m wall

The story

Over a red ground that shows through everywhere, the canvas fills with blocks of color — olive green, ultramarine, grey, black — arranged like the stones of a wall. None dominates: the whole surface is occupied and the red acts as mortar between them.

Above those blocks runs a repertoire of signs drawn in fine line: circles, spirals, zigzags, crosses, an oval, a flower. At the upper left three letters can be read, «ABC», and at the lower right the artist's monogram, «EA».

It is the largest Armas in the collection and the closest to graffiti: the order is that of a written wall, not of a centred composition. It is dated 2007.

Why this work?

«Figura y ciudad» (2007), by Enrico Armas, is an acrylic on canvas measuring 100 × 80 cm: over a red ground acting as mortar, blocks of olive green, ultramarine, grey and black are arranged like the stones of a wall, covered with circles, spirals and zigzags in fine line, with the letters «ABC» above and the monogram «EA» below. A unique, signed work, selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for its written-wall energy.

In your space

It is the largest and loudest of the Armas works: it calls for a wide, uncluttered wall in a living room or entryway, and enough distance to read it whole.

About the artist

Enrico Armas

Venezuela, 1957 · Painting and sculpture

Enrico Armas Ponce (Caracas, Venezuela, 23 November 1957) is a painter and sculptor, son of the writer Alfredo Armas Alfonzo and of Aída Ponce. He began exhibiting in Caracas as a teenager and in 1977 won the Pepino Acquavella Prize at the V Salón Nacional de Jóvenes. The following year, on a French government scholarship, he trained in France — among other places at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His work moves from abstraction to figuration and back, almost always with color leading.
