The story

The whole work is a single cream tone. What organises it is not color but relief: the corrugated cardboard leaves a continuous vertical ribbing that runs across the entire ground, and over it zones have been worked where the corrugation changes direction. Light arriving from the side is enough to make each zone return a different grey.

Across the upper two thirds, seven long, straight black lines cross at open angles, with no vanishing point and no meeting. In the lower third there is a horizontal rectangle split on the diagonal: each half carries the corrugation in a different direction and the two meet along that diagonal, like a herringbone, so that two triangles appear which exist without being drawn.

Juan Urbina (Caracas, 1955) works in this abstraction made of incision and line. The work is dated 2014 and its title is «Incisiones y líneas dispersas».

Why this work?

«Incisiones y líneas dispersas» (2014), by Juan Urbina, is a mixed media on corrugated cardboard measuring 49.5 × 41 cm: a monochrome cream field crossed by the vertical ribbing of the board, with seven long black lines crossing in the upper area and, below, a rectangle split on the diagonal by the change in direction of the corrugation. A unique piece, selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER because it changes completely with the light it receives.

In your space

It needs raking light to exist: a wall with a side spotlight or near a window, in a calm space where the relief can be read up close.

About the artist

Juan Urbina

Venezuela, 1955 · Geometric abstraction and work on cardboard

Juan Urbina (Caracas, Venezuela, 1955) studied painting and drawing at the Escuela Cristóbal Rojas. His work moved from a figurative circus imagery to a geometric abstraction built out of lines: he incises and scatters marks across corrugated cardboard so that raking light produces different tones within a single flat color. Several of his works carry «líneas dispersas» in their titles.
