The story
In the foreground, a man with a moustache and blue eyes wears a shirt of colored diamonds with a pointed red collar and, on his head, an orange hat shaped like a boat: green portholes, a zigzag band and a striped funnel from which grey smoke rises.
Behind him stand three circus performers in costumes of dots, stars and diamonds: the one at the left in a blue boat-shaped hat from which grey smoke rises, the one in the center in a starred cone and the one at the right in a two-pointed jester's cap, and among them a nude woman with reddish hair, seen in profile. Two pale beams of light fall diagonally from above. In the margins, very small, an elephant with an acrobat on top at the left and, at the right, a standing acrobat holding another upside down. The signature is at the lower right.
Why this work?

About the artist
Juan Urbina
Venezuela, 1955 · Geometric abstraction and work on cardboard
Juan Urbina (Caracas, Venezuela, 1955) studied painting and drawing at the Escuela Cristóbal Rojas. His work moved from a figurative circus imagery to a geometric abstraction built out of lines: he incises and scatters marks across corrugated cardboard so that raking light produces different tones within a single flat color. Several of his works carry «líneas dispersas» in their titles.
