"Líneas dispersas" in a room
Room view — approximate scale on a 3.2 m wall

The story

Against a cream ground in which the ribbing of the cardboard shows through, three pale lines in relief run diagonally down from the upper left and end on a rectangle of slanting black and white stripes near the bottom. Inside the rectangle, a stepped line shifts the stripes.

At the upper right floats a circle of grey stripes, also slanting and cut by a stepped line. There is nothing else: three lines, a circle and a rectangle in an empty field.

Why this work?

«Líneas dispersas» (2014), by Juan Urbina, is a mixed media on corrugated cardboard measuring 47.7 × 32.2 cm: on a cream ground, three lines in relief run diagonally down to a rectangle of black and white stripes, with a circle of grey stripes at the upper right. A unique piece in a double box, selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for its geometric economy.

In your space

A pale work with few elements: it gains on a white wall with side light, which is what brings out the relief.

About the artist

Juan Urbina

Venezuela, 1955 · Geometric abstraction and work on cardboard

Juan Urbina (Caracas, Venezuela, 1955) studied painting and drawing at the Escuela Cristóbal Rojas. His work moved from a figurative circus imagery to a geometric abstraction built out of lines: he incises and scatters marks across corrugated cardboard so that raking light produces different tones within a single flat color. Several of his works carry «líneas dispersas» in their titles.
