"Ventana del circo" in a room
Room view — approximate scale on a 3.2 m wall

The story

The work is mounted in a wooden window of six openings — two rows of three — with the worn red and ochre paint of the frame itself left in view. Each opening holds a different scene, and the title of the piece names precisely that device: the circus is seen through a window.

Above: a figure in a striped cap beside a white horse; a barefoot couple standing; and a body flying over two women seated at a table with a bottle and some fruit. Below: three nudes with their arms raised; a group with a blonde woman in white and a child in front; and a family of performers, with a boy in a diamond-patterned cone hat, a man in a spotted costume, a small child and a woman in white.

The range is of browns, ochres and muted whites, and the surface is worked in relief: lumps and scratches are visible on each panel. «Ventana del circo» is dated 2008, measures 80 × 100 cm and is signed at the lower right.

Why this work?

«Ventana del circo» (2008), by Juan Urbina, is a mixed media on MDF measuring 80 × 100 cm, mounted in a wooden window of six openings: in each, a scene of circus figures in browns, ochres and muted whites — a white horse, a barefoot couple, a flying body, three nudes, a crowd and a family of performers. A unique, signed work, selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER because the window turns six scenes into a single story.

In your space

Its horizontal format and warm range call for a wide wall with tempered light: above a sideboard, in a dining room, or in a library of dark woods.

About the artist

Juan Urbina

Venezuela, 1955 · Geometric abstraction and work on cardboard

Juan Urbina (Caracas, Venezuela, 1955) studied painting and drawing at the Escuela Cristóbal Rojas. His work moved from a figurative circus imagery to a geometric abstraction built out of lines: he incises and scatters marks across corrugated cardboard so that raking light produces different tones within a single flat color. Several of his works carry «líneas dispersas» in their titles.
