The story
The whole surface is covered in vertical black and white stripes, divided into three horizontal bands. In each band, a diagonal line shifts the stripes: it rises from left to right in the top band, falls in the middle one and rises again in the bottom one, so that the three form a continuous zigzag.
The inventory records another work by Urbina with the same title and the same year, also published in this catalogue; they are different pieces. This is the one with vertical black and white stripes.
Why this work?
«Incisiones y líneas dispersas» (2014), by Juan Urbina, is a mixed media on corrugated cardboard in a 50 × 35 cm frame (frame size; the work itself is smaller, still to be measured): vertical black and white stripes in three bands, crossed by a zigzag of diagonal lines that shift the striping. A unique piece in a white box behind glass, selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for its optical vibration.
In your space
In black and white it works on almost any wall; it pairs with the other work of the same title if they are hung together.

About the artist
Juan Urbina
Venezuela, 1955 · Geometric abstraction and work on cardboard
Juan Urbina (Caracas, Venezuela, 1955) studied painting and drawing at the Escuela Cristóbal Rojas. His work moved from a figurative circus imagery to a geometric abstraction built out of lines: he incises and scatters marks across corrugated cardboard so that raking light produces different tones within a single flat color. Several of his works carry «líneas dispersas» in their titles.
