"La Virgen y Changó" in a room
Room view — approximate scale on a 3.2 m wall

The story

The whole picture is in turquoise and water greens, with accents of crimson and red. At the centre a seated frontal figure wears a crown of rays and looks out at the viewer; around it, other forms — a cross, a cup, an eye in the upper left corner — appear and dissolve back into the paint.

Over the ground, painted in raised, light strokes, there are words: the largest crosses the upper band and reads «BIRONGO»; at the lower left «LOVE», and at the lower right «DIOS».

The three words point the same way. Changó is an orisha of the Yoruba pantheon, present in Afro-American religions; and Birongo is a town in Barlovento, in Miranda State, founded by enslaved people fleeing the plantations, known for its San Juan Bautista drum festivals and for giving its name to an Afro-Venezuelan spiritual tradition. The work is signed «ARMAS» at the lower right and dated 2011.

Why this work?

«La Virgen y Changó» (2011), by Enrico Armas, is an acrylic on canvas measuring 60 × 80 cm: a field of turquoise and water greens with crimson accents, from which a seated figure with a crown of rays emerges, surrounded by signs and by words painted over the ground — «BIRONGO» large above, «LOVE» and «DIOS» below. A unique, signed work, selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for its crossing of religious iconography and writing.

In your space

The turquoise calls for a white wall and tempered light: it works well in an entryway or a living room, and rewards stepping close to read the words.
