The story

This untitled piece unfolds a grid of slender vertical bars in blue-grey that vibrate against a field of deep blue. The silkscreen —signed and numbered in pencil within an edition of 140— sets down a precise rhythm of parallel lines, where repetition and the subtle optical shift between the bars create a serene, measured visual tension.

Alejandro Otero (1921–1990) is a central figure of Venezuelan modern art and a pioneer of geometric abstraction and kinetic art, celebrated for his «Coloritmos». This work on paper distills that language: the vertical structure, the rigorous order, and the investigation of color and optical vibration that defined his contribution to twentieth-century art in Venezuela.

Why this work?

This untitled work (1992) by Alejandro Otero is a silkscreen on paper measuring 43 × 43 cm, in a signed edition numbered 137/140. A grid of slender vertical blue-grey bars over a dark blue field distills the geometric, kinetic language of the Venezuelan master. It was selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for its abstract rigor and the signature of a one of those who introduced geometric abstraction and kinetic art in Venezuela.

In your space

Its vertical format of nearly a meter and its deep blue call for a broad, well-lit wall, where it works as a focal piece in a living room, an entryway, or a study of sober tone.

Alejandro Otero

Venezuela, 1921–1990 · Geometric abstraction and kinetic art

Alejandro Otero (1921–1990) was a Venezuelan painter and sculptor, and one of those who introduced geometric abstraction and kinetic art in Latin America. His investigation of color, line, and rhythm — best known through his «Coloritmos» — pushed painting toward pure structure and movement. His graphic work carries that same visual economy into the print.
