The story

Two figures fill the whole square, one on each side. Both wear golden headdresses with a strong pink bead set off-centre toward the outer side — to the left in the left-hand figure and to the right in the right-hand one — on the lower edge of the gold, and a band of colored dots beneath, and both have smooth faces, without features.

The one at the right holds a stringed instrument: the body is a magenta pink covered in leaves and scrollwork, and across it run four yellow strings laid in relief, while a green striped neck rises toward the upper edge. A white, granular hand closes over the strings. The one at the left holds her hands in the same playing posture, one high and one lower, over orange and gold forms that do not resolve into any recognisable instrument.

Between and around them no plain ground remains: blue-green leaves with sharp contours, colored tesserae, golden scrollwork and silver flakes cover the rest of the canvas. Everything stands in relief and is outlined in thick black. The signature «Pinto», in yellow, is at the lower right, on the body of the instrument.

Why this work?

This untitled work, signed «Pinto», is a mixed media on canvas in a 42 × 41 cm frame (frame size; the canvas itself is smaller, still to be measured): two figures with golden headdresses and smooth faces, one with a magenta-bodied stringed instrument and four yellow strings in relief, on a ground of tesserae and leaves covering the whole surface. A unique, signed work, selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for its small format and density of color.

In your space

By size it is a piece for a close corner: a small entryway, a shelf, or a salon-style group of small pictures on a wall.

About the artist

Fernando Pinto

Biographical details to be confirmed · Textured painting

There are artists of this name with public records, but we have not been able to confirm which of them signs these pieces. Of the three works held in the collection one can say what is visible: scenes of musicians — guitar, violin, piano — built up in raised paste, with thick black outlines and a saturated color that leaves not a millimetre of ground empty. The figures have smooth faces and greatly elongated limbs, and in two of them the signature reads «Pinto», drawn in yellow; the third carries a different rubric, also in yellow.
