The story

In the foreground, a figure seated on the floor plays a guitar. The body of the instrument is violet, sown with small leaves, its soundhole ringed in green and its neck pink with red dots at the head. The figure has a smooth face, featureless but for a line of beads where the eyes would be, hair gathered in a red scarf with a green leaf, and very long legs stretched across a mat striped in red and grey.

Behind, standing, a second figure with green hair plays a violin whose mauve, veined body is crossed lengthwise by a green band carrying the strings, its red bow running across the scene on the diagonal and the left arm raised to the right, the hand open. Both wear patterned fabrics — orange with scrollwork, greens, blues — that overlap without showing where one ends and the other begins.

No ground is left empty: the wall is a tapestry of red flowers with sharp petals on green stems, blue six-leaved flowers and tiles with small figures. The whole surface stands in relief, with thick black contours and granular whites, and there are gold and silver glints scattered through the weave. The signature is at the lower right.

Why this work?

This untitled work by Fernando Pinto, signed in yellow at the lower right, is a mixed media on canvas measuring 75 × 55 cm: two figures with smooth faces and elongated limbs play guitar and violin on a striped mat, against a ground of red and blue flowers that leaves not a millimetre empty, the whole surface standing in relief. A unique, signed work, selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for its saturated color and tactile surface.

In your space

A picture of full color calls for a neutral wall and raking light, which is what reveals the relief: a dining room, an open kitchen or a short hallway.

About the artist

Fernando Pinto

Biographical details to be confirmed · Textured painting

There are artists of this name with public records, but we have not been able to confirm which of them signs these pieces. Of the three works held in the collection one can say what is visible: scenes of musicians — guitar, violin, piano — built up in raised paste, with thick black outlines and a saturated color that leaves not a millimetre of ground empty. The figures have smooth faces and greatly elongated limbs, and in two of them the signature reads «Pinto», drawn in yellow; the third carries a different rubric, also in yellow.
