The story

A dancer in profile hugs her knees, crouched and balanced on the tips of her pointe shoes, her gaze lowered. Her hair is gathered in a bun and she wears a dark leotard with a damask pattern.

The background is a damask wallpaper in greys and blacks, and the floor vertical stripes of grey and white. The figure is resolved in greys and a pale beige tone. The signature and date are at the lower right.

Why this work?

This untitled work (2013) by Marilyn Duarte is an acrylic and charcoal on canvas measuring 82.2 × 66.9 cm: a dancer in profile, crouched on pointe, hugging her knees, against a grey damask ground and a striped floor. A unique, signed work, selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for the stillness of the gesture.

In your space

In calm greys: it works in a bedroom or a reading room.

About the artist

Marilyn Duarte

Venezuela · Mixed media and hyperrealism

The works by Marilyn Duarte in the collection all centre on a dancer: a girl tying her slipper, a dancer crouched on pointe, a nude in mid-air seen from behind and a dancer crossing a tondo. The figures are worked in greys and whites, detailed down to the lace of the tutu — which, according to Pablo Vaca, she renders with airbrush over a stencil — against grounds of damask, stripes or color.
