"Untitled" in a room
Room view — approximate scale on a 3.2 m wall

The story

A nude dancer crosses the canvas in mid-air, seen from behind, her dark hair loose and one arm reaching down. At hip level a fan-shaped tutu opens out, of pale lace with dark ribs.

The ground is black, with a damask of flowers and birds, only slightly lighter, over the right two-thirds of the canvas; the left strip is plain black. The light falls on her back, her arms and the tutu.

Why this work?

This untitled work by Marilyn Duarte is a mixed media on canvas measuring 162.5 × 114 cm: a nude dancer in mid-air, seen from behind, with a fan-shaped tutu of pale lace against a black damask ground. A unique piece on unstretched canvas, selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for its scale and contrast.

In your space

A large, black-ground vertical format: it calls for a tall, pale wall in a living room or a stairwell.

About the artist

Marilyn Duarte

Venezuela · Mixed media and hyperrealism

The works by Marilyn Duarte in the collection all centre on a dancer: a girl tying her slipper, a dancer crouched on pointe, a nude in mid-air seen from behind and a dancer crossing a tondo. The figures are worked in greys and whites, detailed down to the lace of the tutu — which, according to Pablo Vaca, she renders with airbrush over a stencil — against grounds of damask, stripes or color.
