The story

The work is a tondo: a circle 110 cm in diameter, with no corners on which to rest the composition. Within it, a dancer crosses the field diagonally, her body arched, one arm raised upward and the other extended to the right, her legs drawn up and her pointe shoes tied at the ankle.

The tutu is the brightest thing in the piece: a white lace of fine mesh that opens like a fan behind the figure and appears again, closer-fitting, over the hip. The rest of the body is worked in greys and whites on the ground itself, so that flesh and support share a tone.

The field is an earthy, mottled surface between brown and rust, run through with fine dark lines and flecked with specks that gather into a ring beside the edge of the circle. Along the lower part, a row of vertical golden bars — one of them reddish — crosses the tondo from side to side and holds the dancer up like a floor.

Why this work?

This untitled work by Marilyn Duarte is a mixed media on canvas in tondo format, 110 cm in diameter (110 × 110 cm overall): a dancer in a white lace tutu crosses an earthy, mottled field on the diagonal, above a row of vertical golden bars. A unique piece signed on the reverse, on a stretcher 2.5 cm deep, selected by Pablo Vaca for EL ART DEALER for its circular format and for the light of the lace against the rust.

In your space

A large tondo does not compete with the rectangular pictures on a wall: it works alone and centred, in an entryway, a stairwell or a stretch of wall between two doors.

About the artist

Marilyn Duarte

Venezuela · Mixed media and hyperrealism

The works by Marilyn Duarte in the collection all centre on a dancer: a girl tying her slipper, a dancer crouched on pointe, a nude in mid-air seen from behind and a dancer crossing a tondo. The figures are worked in greys and whites, detailed down to the lace of the tutu — which, according to Pablo Vaca, she renders with airbrush over a stencil — against grounds of damask, stripes or color.
